How do I check my Audi A1's tire tread depth?

I just got my hands on an Audi A1 and want to take good care of it. Is there a specific way I should be checking the tread depth on my tires to make sure they are safe to drive on? I want to avoid any potential accidents.

Insert the penny into one of the grooves in the tire with President Lincoln's head facing down. If the top of Lincoln's head is visible, your tires may need to be replaced soon.
