What causes the coolant gauge to read high in an Audi 80?

I have noticed that the coolant temperature gauge in my Audi 80 is reading higher than normal. I have checked the coolant levels and they seem fine. What could be causing this issue?

It is possible that there is a problem with your thermostat. When the thermostat fails, it can cause the engine to run hotter and the coolant gauge to read high.
