What is the function of Audi A1's start-stop system?

I have heard that the Audi A1 has a start-stop system, but I am not sure what it does or how it works. Can someone explain it to me?

The start-stop system on the Audi A1 helps to reduce fuel consumption and emissions by automatically turning off the engine when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. It starts the engine again as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal.
