What is the function of the Audi A8 oil pump?

I'm planning on buying an Audi A8 and I'm curious about the function of the oil pump. Can someone explain it to me in simple terms?

The oil pump is responsible for circulating oil through the engine to provide lubrication and cooling. Without it, the engine would quickly overheat and suffer from lack of lubrication.
