What is the meaning of the letters 'G' and 'F' on the Audi 80's gearshift?

I've noticed that the gearshift on my Audi 80 has the letters 'G' and 'F' next to the gear numbers. I'm not sure what they stand for and I can't find any information in the manual. Can someone explain their purpose and if they affect the driving experience?

The 'G' is short for 'Grundstufe' (basic mode) and the 'F' is short for 'Fahrstufe' (driving mode). They are indicators of the different driving modes you can select with your gearshift. The 'G' mode is the default one and is suitable for regular driving. The 'F' mode is designed for performance driving, where gear changes are quicker and shift points are higher.
