What is the purpose of the Audi 80's camshaft seal and how do I know if it needs to be replaced?

I have a 2002 Audi 80 and the check engine light keeps coming on. I've heard that the camshaft seal could be the cause, but I'm not sure what this part does and how to tell if it needs to be replaced. Can you provide some insight?

The camshaft seal is responsible for preventing oil leaks from the camshaft. If it becomes worn or damaged, it can cause engine performance issues and even lead to engine damage. To check if it needs replacing, inspect it for cracks or tears and check the oil levels. If there is a noticeable decrease in oil levels or you see visible leakage, it's time to replace the seal.
