Why does my Audi 80's engine make rattling noises?

I have noticed that my Audi 80's engine makes a rattling noise when I start it up and when the car is stationary. It seems to go away when I start driving. What could be causing this and what can I do to fix it?

The rattling noise could be caused by a loose exhaust heat shield. This can usually be fixed by tightening or reattaching the heat shield. Check with a mechanic if you are not confident doing it yourself.

It's possible that the rattling noise is coming from the timing belt or timing chain. If it is loose or worn, it can cause noises when starting the car. Have a mechanic inspect and replace if necessary.

Check your oil levels and make sure they are at the recommended level. Low oil levels can cause rattling noises in the engine. If the levels are low, top up the oil and see if the noise improves.
