Why does my Audi A4's engine make a whining noise?

I recently noticed that my Audi A4's engine has started making a high pitched whining noise when I accelerate. It seems to be more noticeable when the engine is cold. What could be causing this and how can I fix it?

It is likely that the whining noise is coming from a worn or damaged accessory belt or pulley. This can be easily fixed by replacing the belt or pulley.
