Why is my Audi A3 making a strange whirring noise?

I recently purchased an Audi A3 and have noticed a strange whirring noise coming from the engine. It's not constant, but it seems to happen more frequently when accelerating. Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

It's possible that the whirring noise is due to a faulty serpentine belt. I would recommend taking your Audi A3 to a certified mechanic to have it inspected and possibly replaced.

Another possible cause of the noise could be a damaged pulley or tensioner. These components are vital for keeping the serpentine belt in place and if they are damaged, it could cause the belt to slip and create a whirring noise. I would suggest having these checked as well.

In some cases, the whirring noise may be due to a loose or worn alternator. The alternator is responsible for charging the battery and if it's not functioning properly, it could cause additional strain on the serpentine belt, resulting in the noise. I would advise having the alternator inspected and potentially replaced.
