Why does my Audi A5's engine produce a knocking sound at high speeds?

I recently purchased an Audi A5 and have noticed a knocking sound coming from the engine when I reach highway speeds. It's not consistently present, but occurs more often when accelerating or decelerating. What could be causing this and is it something I should be concerned about?
